Director Jackie Chan and the Chinese and Italian creative team held an in-depth production meeting on key aspects of Turandot. Discussions focused on character styling and makeup, movement design, stage settings and the visual language of costumes, refining the production’s approach to Eastern aesthetics, dramatic intensity and international stage expression.
For character styling and makeup, the team examined the principal characters’ identities, emotional layers and visual presence on stage. The designs should serve character development while complementing the overall stage aesthetic, conveying an Eastern sensibility that is majestic, mysterious and rich in dramatic tension.
In movement direction, the discussion reflected Jackie Chan’s emphasis on physical expression and rhythmic control. The team explored ensemble staging, martial arts movement and the physical dynamics of relationships, aiming to make movement both visually powerful and integral to the drama and the characters’ inner lives.
For the stage settings, the Chinese and Italian teams discussed spatial depth, structural transitions, visual rhythm and the atmosphere of major scenes. Coordinated use of stage installations, multimedia imagery and lighting will help create a theatrical world with epic scale, fluidity and an Eastern sense of fantasy.
On costume design, the team considered visual consistency, clear character identities and the interplay of materials, lines and colour with movement on stage. The aim is to respect the work’s classical character while developing a contemporary visual expression for international audiences.
The meeting clarified the production’s priorities and laid a firmer foundation for the next stages of detailed design, rehearsals and stage presentation.
